[Puke On] Left 4 Dead 1 & 2 - You must be this tall ... to die!
The best goddamn co-op game you'll ever find, that's what it is.
First started as a project from Turtle Rock Studios and afterward lovingly embraced by Valve's touch of brilliance, it's a shooter that pits you and 3 friends (or bots, if you hate yourself) versus lots of zombies.
What makes it awesome however is that team play is not just recommended, it is most utterly required. That means you need the right people to enjoy this game and you've come to the right place.
This game is so awesome I want to play with you guys
PC:
Steamgroup: Armadeaddon
For an invite Join the Chat! It's where lobbies get made and players celebrate.
Xbox 360:
Add the following gamertag to your friendslist: A PA L4D2 Group - list maintained by Local H Jay
LEFT 4 DEAD 1 The original. Already old and nearly forgotten.
Browse to /Steam/steamapps/common/left 4 dead/left4dead/cfg and create an autoexec.cfg file if it does not exist already.
add following line:
mm_dedicated_search_maxping 100 (default 250)
This will limit the max allowed server ping in lobby searches. You can change it in-game by using the console (~, enable dev console in options)
LEFT 4 DEAD 2 Are you as strong as Moustachio? Prove it.
Basic Game info - what is new?
Meet the new Survivors:
Meet the new Special Infected:
Meet the new Campaigns:
Dead Center
The survivors meet up in a burning building and head for the evac station in the shopping mall.
Uncommon infected: Hazmat suit zombies, immune to fire.
Dark Carnival
A rollercoaster ride of zombie shooting fun in the local carnival!
Uncommon infected: Clowns. They rile up common infected with the sound they make.
Swamp Fever
Crawl your way through the swamp to the ol' plantation house.
Uncommon infected: Mudmen. Nasty crouched creatures who fling mud at your face and move wickedly fast in the water.
Hard Rain
The Survivors need to get fuel for the boat if they are to .. survive. Takes place in an industrial area and weather may be a bit cloudy.
Uncommon infected: Construction workers, immune to sound. They won't go after pipe bombs.
The Parish
New Orleans at last! Finally safety? Takes place in broad daylight.
Uncommon infected: Armored riot police zombie.
Meet the new Modes:
Scavenge:
A short form of Versus. Each team tries to get as much fuel into the tank as possible each round, best 2 out of 3. Convenient when you only have 30 mins of time available or want to get more practice out of the special infected characters.
Fuel cannisters that are dropped by survivors on the floor (orange glow) can be destroyed by Spitter goo or bullets.
A round ends for a team when the timer hits zero and overtime ends. Overtime lasts as long as at least one survivor is holding a jerry can. You get extra time for every jerry can poured into the machine.
Realism mode:
Another mode for the true Hardcore. Realism mode removes a few crutches players rely on in campaign (and can be played on any difficulty):
No silhouette glow on survivors and items will only glow when you're very close to them.
Bullets that hit the infected bodies are less effective compared to headshots.
Witches will instantly kill survivors when they scream and hit.
No survivor rescue closets, defib. or getting to the next saferoom are the only ways of getting dead players back.
The old modes, Versus, Survival and Campaign are still in place. Survival places your team in several crescendo events, try to survive as long as possible and beat the score of your friends on the leaderboards. Versus matches 4 survivor players vs 4 special infected players, each team tries to get the furthest through the maps.
New Gore system:
(Australian and German copies of the game are censored because the government hates you - you should import the game, steam gift copies from foreign people should work.)
What else is new:
Sweeter looking game with awesome water and storm effects and marvelous trees.
Lots of new weapons and items to choose from. Items are scattered more randomly across the map and you may start a campaign with different weapons than otherwise.
Boomer Bile will attract zombies when thrown. Infected that are hit by the bile will be attacked by the other infected, this includes biled tanks.
Adrenaline gives you 25 temporary health and a speed boost to your movement speed and all your actions (including reviving players).
Melee weapons can be found everywhere and replace your pistol slot when picked up. You can still 'block' with melee weapons, they provide great close-combat area damage but have windows of vulnerability in-between the swings
Incendiary and explosive ammo that can be taken along (instead of a medkit) or deployed immediately.
Laser sight upgrade will add a laser pointer to your main weapon and improve accuracy.
Defibrillator replaces med kit, revives dead players in 3 seconds with 50 HP.
AI Director pushed up the level of the game. Special infected attacks are more coordinated.
Tweak/Edit stuff:
How to find lower ping servers and improve performance:
Lower maximum allowed server ping in lobby searches:
In \Steam\steamapps\common\left 4 dead 2\left4dead2\cfg\config.cfg add the following line:
mm_dedicated_search_maxping 100 (the default value is 300)
Just to be safe, make a file called autoexec.cfg in that same directory and add the line to it as well. To be extra safe, disable Steam Cloud.
You can lower it even more in-game with the console (~, enable dev console in settings) if everyone in the lobby is located close together. Else you might be getting a server that's awesome for you but terrible for others (if you can find one at all). note: Console doesn't work in lobby.
Official dedicated seems to give best results in my experience. After 20 seconds of searching stop and restart the search, else the game will have you act as host.
Performance tweaks
Someone made a config file you can read and edit through for some performance tweaks.
Copy the contents of this page into a new file in the /cfg/ folder (for example: performance.cfg)
In case you're only interested in the network commands, they are:
cl_updaterate "30" // default 20;
cl_cmdrate "30" // default 30;
rate "30000" // default 10000;
cl_resend "1.5" // default 6; How many seconds to wait before retrying to connect to a server
cl_interp "0.067" // default 0.1; Improves hit registration
cl_lagcompensation "1" // default 1; Improves hit registration

DLC 'The Passing' announced!
Valve, creators of best-selling game franchises (such as Half-Life, Portal, Team Fortress, and Counter-Strike) and leading technologies (such as Steam and Source), today announced the first game add-on for its co-operative zombie thriller, Left 4 Dead 2 (L4D2), is in development and targeted for release in early 2010.
Dubbed “The Passing,” the first game add-on for L4D2 brings the original Left 4 Dead (L4D1) Survivors down south for a meeting with the L4D2 cast, while delivering new single-player, multiplayer and co-operative gameplay for the PC and Xbox 360.
Targeted for release in early spring, “The Passing” takes place just after the Dead Center campaign of L4D2. Set in a small town in rural Georgia, players assume the role of the L4D2 Survivors as they meet with the L4D1 characters.
In addition to the new co-operative campaign and associated narrative, “The Passing” will include new arenas for Survival, Versus and Scavenge mode and introduce a new co-operative challenge mode of play. The Passing will also include a new “uncommon common” zombie class, melee weapon, and firearm.
“The Passing will become the most important campaign in the Left 4 Dead story, as all the Survivors are being called together in one campaign,” said Doug Lombardi, VP of marketing at Valve. “It will also be a huge offering of new gameplay content, with something new for every game mode plus a new uncommon common and weaponry.”
Scavenger really does pull together a lot of the best bits of the competitive game. Being a mode that doesn't take hours to complete is a big plus as well.
i did, was rather boring. i cant remember any crescendo events where i was thinking "man, i wish this would go on for ever and ever" so the whole idea strikes me as rather awkward.

I wonder what happened to Keith when the Zombie Apocalypse began.
The biggest mystery of the game.
I imagine Ellis had to off him when he started to turn, and he is working out the emotional trauma it caused him by telling light-hearted stories about his best friend, while trying to stay strong and help out the rest of the group.

I tried it in the original a few times. It's a neat diversion, but not really something you can keep playing for very long.
Are the gauntlets included as survival events? I haven't ventured through the menu to check.

Bitemarks over 90% of his body. But that was only after the first wave of infection. The zombies said they'd never seen bitemarks on top of previous bitemarks before.
Bottom line: If you've got a 360 and L4D, good times can be had. Add "A PA L4D Group" to get in on the fun!
A common complaint I hear about the list is that there's no one actually playing L4D on it. Just invite people on the list, regardless of what they're playing. The list is there to get groups together, and a lot of the time people will drop out of whatever they're doing and join in. I for one will pretty much always switch over to L4D, unless I just got in a CoD : WaW party like I did last night when Kawl wanted to play.
How does one add this? I just add "A PA L4D Group" to my friends list or what?
edit: and im assuming people are using the same list for l4d2?
I enjoyed survival mode in the original in small doses. I probably played a few games here and there, and later on I started to play it once or twice every two weeks. I imagine that I will be playing it a bit more in this when I get the chance.
Its good for those days were you don't want to play against another team, don't want to go through an entire campaign and in the end, all you want to do is shoot zombies. Cause damn, shooting zombies is fun when you get rid of all the technical stuff.
Its also good for trying out different guns that you might be afraid to use in a real game, its part of the reason I eventually liked the Hunting rifle in L4D1, as before then I had figured it was gimped (granted I was pretty new at the time) but once I used it, it proved to have its place and I liked it a lot.

Survival is great when you only have a few minutes to play and want to shoot some zombies.
Beyond that, there's not a whole lot of value. Nearly every survival game I've played with my friends quickly devolves into games of "lets pile all the explosives together and set them off" or survivor deathmatch.
I wonder what happened to Keith when the Zombie Apocalypse began.
The list of things Keith has survived is pretty damn long. One little apocalypse ain't gonna stop him.
Keith met up with Chicago Ted and they're doing fine.

Scavenge is what survival SHOULD have been. Now that we have scavenge, I don't think I'll ever touch survival again (not that I was planning on it anyway).
Good vs game with some regulars tonight. Close win on Parish.
Why the hell haven't I shot zombies with you yet.
Vs is incredibly fun this time around. For the most part all of the games are super close and tense.
I hate but all you guys had left was finale to do you all didn't have to leave . As for that corner we were in you can bounce the spitter spit and there was a wall you can have torn down and puked on us.

It wasn't even a corner, it was totally a staircase and corridor.
I can see it becoming the standard hold out position for SF though.

This is true but I can at least seeing it being breachable unlike some of the original finale spots.
Parish is still the best Finale but I have yet to play Dead Centre on VS.

Also we were awesome.
Shot and killed an injured jockey blind through a roof with a single shot.
If one team is in the groove of things and the other isn't yet the game is probably going to go in their favor, why even stick around to get rolled at that point?
you are not alone, the number of ragequitters in this mode is RIDICULOUS. people leave the games over the slightest annoyance, which makes it impossible to form a working team, people log in, notice they are on the losing side (well duh, no team, no win) and log out just as quickly.
i have rarely seen the losing team consisting of the same members after one round, which is remarkable, considering a round is only two minutes.
You guys must be playing with the wrong crowd, but also, Stew, quitting isn't going to help anyone.
Scavange is made perfectly possible by some focus and team-work. Identify your main problems and solve them. If you have weaknesses then you just have to work around them or fix them; it's by no means a case of being inherently destined to lose.
The most common weaknesses, for example, are:
1) Splitting up
2) Not covering each other
3) No communication
4) Lack of individual skill
Each of these things can be solved or compensated for fairly easily with some level-headed application of authority.
I've had a few rounds with PA people, and when we got rolled we definitely tried to coordinate better. Thing is, a given side only gets roughly 40 seconds or so at the beginning of the round to try to cover everything they need to do better. That gets harsh because there are often conflicting ways on how to do this.
Again, I agree that it's possible to turn it around, but in such a short timeframe, it isn't likely. If you have both teams trying to coordinate with new players each round it would even out the playing field in this aspect. I would just like to see it as some sort of setting that you could vote on when the round starts or something like that. I don't think it should be something that is forced upon everyone.
I've not played this for 2 days and already I am having problems coping with the real world without envisioning it in a zombie apocalypse scenario.
I've noticed that I have trouble falling asleep at night if I had just played L4D2 at all within the previous 2 hours. I keep hearing people yell "jockey on me! jockey on me!" and picturing myself getting slammed into a wall by a charger.
I really hate on vs finales how you can't choose where to spawn. Its frustrating on the last level of Dark Carnival when you get spawned as a boomer a mile away as they camp on the two huge towers. There is no way you could sneak up.

Man this game is hard as FUCK with only 2 non-AI people even on normal at finales. We were doing the Atrium together with 2 AI partners and every single special infected spawned all at once while we were crossing a walkway. A Jockey rode one to their death over the railing, a tank slapped another off the railing. A spitter.. spit at us, and a charger started pounding away on the only other human player besides myself. I killed the Charger and and Spitter and helped him up. We killed the tank only to have a second tank IMMEDIATELY spawn on the opposite side of the walkway while a new swarm started up. We didn't stand a chance and this was on NORMAL.
Tanks have a weird tendency to surprise me in this one. I remember walking through a door in one of the later Parish campaigns when a tank walks out to greet me, followed by the cueing of the tank music.

Does realism work in survival? Haven't checked yet.
The biggest mystery of the game.
I imagine Ellis had to off him when he started to turn, and he is working out the emotional trauma it caused him by telling light-hearted stories about his best friend, while trying to stay strong and help out the rest of the group.
See? Ellis is the best.
I tried it in the original a few times. It's a neat diversion, but not really something you can keep playing for very long.
Are the gauntlets included as survival events? I haven't ventured through the menu to check.
The list of things Keith has survived is pretty damn long. One little apocalypse ain't gonna stop him.
It was on accident.
How does one add this? I just add "A PA L4D Group" to my friends list or what?
edit: and im assuming people are using the same list for l4d2?
We should play the first.
This needs to change.
Tomorrow.
I would probably pass out if i tried now.

I know I am going to snag a PC copy then. I knew that if I waited it would go on sale like the first one did.
It wasn't even a corner, it was totally a staircase and corridor.
I can see it becoming the standard hold out position for SF though.

Though I fear for the day that he invites me to a game that turns out to be Expert Realism mode. And I get us all killed.
Also iowa, how'd that game turn out last night?
I went to bed after the 3rd time we got stuck on the DK 4 crescendo.
There was a lot of friendly fire. and people jumping around. and stuff.

I make an awful Tank. Finally getting the hang of the Charger though, and I was able to redeem an awful infected round on my part with a spit or two.
You don't necessarily have to be good at the game to lead. You just have to have a sense of where to go and have a team willing to listen.
