As you will have heard by now, we are adding advertisements to the forum. This thread is for information on how these work, and for reporting any bugs or inappropriate ads.
The important things to know about the ads are that there are filters in place on these ads. This should keep out any ads for political candidates and any partisan political advertising. It should also keep out inappropriate ads. Even the best filters can fail, though, so if you run into any ads you think are inappropriate for these forums, we’d like you to post in this thread with the following information:
- Your browser
- Your device (essentially, if you’re on a PC, an iPhone, etc)
- Your region (we don’t need specifics, a city would be fine)
- What ad you saw. Screenshot it, if you can, if it’s against the rules to post, shoot me a PM
If you’re uncomfortable posting this information publicly, you can either send it to me in a PM or send an email to forumadmin@penny-arcade.com
One last thing:
ClubPA members will have access to an ad-free version of the forums. If you’re running into problems there, post here, send a pm, or send an email to forumadmin@penny-arcade.com and we’ll get you sorted out.
If you’d like to sign up for ClubPA, go to
https://www.patreon.com/ClubPA and you can choose from the tiers. We have a special forumer tier, if you’d just like to show your support, but higher tiers will get you access to a bunch of good #content, Penny Arcade store discounts, and exclusive merch. You can find more details on the site.
And again: if run into any problems, this is the thread where you should post them. If you have any questions, ask them here as well.

also, the message above asks me to log in to patreon .... do I need to do that each time I'm on the forums?
also also, I don't see any ads so I don't even know if they're on yet.
Turned off my ublock on the forums, saw a really, REALLY basic adsense ad. Then saw the note about clubPA getting to go ad-free, so I logged into my patreon and linked it to the PA website.
And there we go! No adblocker running but no ads around here.
I think it's just supposed to be a one time link-em-up kind of thing? I joined Club PA when the forumer tier was added and only ever had to sign in once. Though I was getting the ads (after disabling ABP, I saw it was now blocking 3 elements instead of the customary 2) and it had me log in to Patreon again. But after doing a Ctrl+refresh, and a signout and another refresh, just logging into the forums seems to get me the normal ad free view. Though I will admit the technical behind the scenes bits of linking accounts like that is not my specialty.
(That's supposed to read "Join Club PA")
The issue is less pronounced in threads with less than 106 pages, but still noticably present.
Tried clearing my cache in case it was a caching issue, but that didn't seem to clear it up.
If anyone is still having issues with this I will say Athenor describes pretty well how to solve the problem. I just signed up for ClubPA and was very, very confused about how to link it until I disabled my adblock. It was a very quick and efficient linking.
It is, at least, entirely inoffensive. Not mad about ads from the SEIU showing up. Just figured yall would want to know.
It's very bright and not easy on the eyes.

Same, still no ads in the mobile view. Not sure if that theme hasn't been updated yet, or mobile just kept my patreon login while desktop didn't.
(I don't have an issue with banners, but popups are actively obnoxious, so it would be good to know if that is a deliberate part of the ad rollout or if it was something hinky at my end)
Ditto for me. I only see ads in desktop mode, not in mobile.
Also mine are for American cars in Chinese which... Weird.
Edit: Wait no, the Sienna is Toyota. So Japanese cars in Chinese which is a little less weird I guess.
I don’t mind banners, but something that takes over the full page until you click through is a whole other level
Yeah this is exactly what I get whenever I come to the forums.

It’s on my tablet currently, but it’s the same as desktop. Mobile gets no ads at all.

Firefox on a Windows PC in Bellingham, WA.
I can't say it's not well-targeted but maybe not appropriate for the forums.
On an Apple iPad running the latest version of its OS, out of Southwest Michigan near Kalamazoo.
I can has cheezburger, yes?
Similar ad here, also an iPad, also up to date on the OS, in Nova Scotia.
I just got that one too. Firefox/Windows desktop/Nova Scotia.
I also got this one safarai/iPad/western Australia.
Satans..... hints.....
Just got that one as well. Firefox, Windows 10, Bellevue WA, 9:39am Pacific time.
Same, Safari, MacBook Pro, Longmont CO, 2:10 PM Pacific time
EDIT: Firefox, using Windows 10 Pro on a PC
As for what's causing everything, we are looking into it.
Had to double-check the rules and make sure that advertising private MMO servers was still against the rules (it is).
Safari, on Apple iPad's latest firmware, near Kalamazoo, MI about 10 a.m. EDT today.
I can has cheezburger, yes?
Latest on Safari/iOS/ iPad.
I have a question about content. While reading the D&D - NRA not gun control thread, I got a pair of pro 2nd Amendment banner ads that were probably more inappropriate for the group ordering the ad. One looks like it is from the NRA. I can post pictures if that is something you all are trying to filter out.
Also, animated ones. Please, no. Please tell me we can report and get rid of the ones that are constantly flashing through multiple images.

I don't know whether you guys (admins) care whether we like or dislike non-NSFW/not-really-inappropriate ads, but ones like that push me toward blocking them.
I'm also suddenly seeing the ads be variable height today, when they've previously been much shorter vertically. Chrome v90.0.4430.51 beta (64-bit)
