I'm so fucking pumped for this game.

Beta was just okay for me. It feels very L4D with not much additional substance. Why not just play L4D2 which has been out for years, has more content, and less technical issues? The card system is interesting, but the effects feel negligible. The only thing I feel this has going for it is putting a L4D-like on a new generation of consoles, and the gunplay. The gunplay feels very, very solid.

I want to love this game, but I don't think it loves me back. I'll still try the full game but beta was simply whelming, not over or under

  • DarkewolfeDarkewolfe Registered User regular
Yeah, I wanted to like this but... I was bored about twenty minutes in honestly. Something is missing and I can't really put my finger on it. The gunplay is not top notch and the enemy/map variety isn't really engaging enough I guess. I don't see any real reason to play this rather than one of the other contemporaries.

What is this I don't even.

The character design is just generic feeling, the characters with the most personality are the basic zombies which look crazy. I'd prefer a more stylized look over this. Sound design? Weak. Soundtrack? Forgettable. L4D was a masterclass in directional sound and ques to denote enemy types. I wanted an evolution of that formula, but it feels like trying to reinvent a formula that was already nearly perfected.

Yeah for me the feeling of the shooting and weapons feels nice and tight with a good weight, it's my one complaint always of L4D.

Definitely it's not nearly as strong in personality, but with the fresher coat of paint I'll still probably put a good amount of time into it.

At least until BF2042 and Infinite.

My friend finds Deep Rock Galactic overwhelming and favors the mindless shooting of B4B. There is definitely a strong market for this.

I feel like the primary motivation for playing this game will be that it's more Left 4 Dead, but it also looks very clearly worse than Left 4 Dead so you're left in the awkward situation where you could just... play Left 4 Dead.

I was super hyped when this got announced but there's nothing in trailers that has impressed me and, bluntly, I don't want to pick this up at full price when I have little confidence in it.

I think zombie games are just fun, like zombie movies, and that's fine. I just think we're spoiled from years of playing the original Left 4 Dead games which are such a high standard to meet. So if you haven't sunk hundreds of hours into the first games, this can scratch the itch. But it's just not the same. I think we're all okay with them experimenting with new ideas and stuff, but the things they've changed don't come together into a very focused product.

I'm happy to be proven wrong, there's still time to right the ship and make things more fun. Mostly making things a bit more streamlined would help a lot.

I'm specifically looking at PvP, which was one of my favorites in the original games, and doesn't seem to be given the same attention here.

I do enjoy the idea of customizing your run over time with better weapons, attachments, and cards, but as it is it seems like the options you have don't do a ton to differentiate themselves in what I've played. Also, I would expect if they only have one map in the beta (which is reasonable, imo) I would expect it to be the one they have the most confidence in, and while there are a number of pretty cool parts of this campaign, there are also a bunch that are pretty forgettable.

All in all, I'm not particularly impressed, it seems totally competent, but I don't think I'm gonna spend 60 bucks on it right out of the gate.

My friend is working on a roguelike game you can play if you want to. (It has free demo)

    Evolve was fantastic, btw.

This beta seemed alright. That specific audio line from zombies is going to need to change asap, though.

I played a few rounds and enjoyed it. Definitely needs a few things that better explain what to do. The part with the mines made no sense, luckily I was with folks who’d done it before. And I’m still not clear what the cards actually do.

There’s definitely potential if they fix just a couple things.

I hate this thread for reminding me about Evolve. I fucking loved that game. Briefly.

Enjoyed the beta but yea... not sure if I will pull the trigger on it. Yet to see what sort of monetization they slap on, and after the debacle that was Evolve I am hoping they learned from their mistake but who knows.

I have mixed feelings about Back 4 Blood, but I will say that playing this without a pre-made group is absolutely terrible, mostly because the matchmaking system is just not good and something that needs to be fixed

Fantastic fucking game. Runs flawless on console (or flawless enough). I also enjoyed EVOLVE but the grind and monetization in that game was trash. It is abundantly clear that B4B has been developed to allow for monetization, however the core of the gameplay is there and I didn't get the feeling that the base game felt like it was missing something.

The card system is great allowing you to adjust your gameplay on the fly depending on how the AI Director has been updating the difficulty. Have to see the other Supply Lines and how in-depth the cards are.

. . .definitely day one for me.

It's a mixed bag. I think they broke a lot of the rules about what made L4D good (every special infected looks unique, every character plays the same), improved on others (guns having separate levels and unique ammo means you are always looking for an upgrade. L4D you could end round 2 with a gun that's good to use for the rest of the game).

I think the card/deck system is a cool idea, but suffers from not being explained well (even though it's pretty simple) and some of the cards are just super good compared to others (the knife for example).

I like how the attachments work, cause finding and upgrade is a choice now. Is a blur gun worth losing your green with better attachments? Most people don't seem to like this though.

It has other problems as well. The Orge fight or flight scene is not well explained, so also every run I did had the team fight. The difficulty curve is a difficulty cliff. It's either to easy or impossible.

And the bots, my God are they dumb.

I feel like most complaints I see on line boil down to "L4D good, B4B bad". And as I said, I do think they took some steps back in key areas. But I also feel most people have some very Rose tinted glasses with L4D. It was a fun game for 2010, but today is very barebones.

Last paragraph hammers it home for me. This feels comparable to L4D or a slight step back. But games have massively changed, and it completely fails to deliver something new, amazing, or at least perfectly polished to justify going back.

What is this I don't even.
  • Local H JayLocal H Jay Registered User regular
L4D2 still holds up today, despite the large amount of cheaters and griefers. Zombie games don't really need much other than fun combat you can play with friends. Also the AI in L4D is much better than the AI bots in this game

  • Local H JayLocal H Jay Registered User regular
Also if anyone hasn't seen this game, it's another L4D-like title with an emphasis on character development

It’s missing perhaps the charm of left 4 dead but I have had some fun in the beta.

Personally not having PVP campaign is a shame as that was like 90% of my time playing it with friends. Also the infected are not as outstanding as the left 4 dead special zombies.

For all the ogre with his lumbering majesty, feels underwhelming compared to the tank music kicking in and seeing something a third of its size punch a car at you.

I think it’s got some solid stuff here and will be interested to see how it progresses.

Anacrusis is tough for me to see, because with as much as I'm excited about the setting and the retro flair and the alien hordes instead of zombie hordes, I don't think the game itself looks very fun or interesting. I feel like solid, dynamic animation is key to giving these games character.

I do feel like if they had the character design and writers of that game, and combat of B4B, you'd have a good enough L4D game

Alright, B4B beta installed. Let's check this puppy out so I don't feel bad about now having made three posts in this thread without even trying the game

Edit: "Profile service is in maintenance mode." My only option is to quit to desktop. Sick.

Edit2: Ohhhhhhh, it's doing that because the beta isn't open yet. I guess. Not very transparent, but my bad, I suppose.

Twitch-access beta was August 5-9. I read something that said an open beta starts tomorrow but I'm not certain if that's true or not.

    Edit: August 12-16 confirmed.

Been playing the beta for a bit. The main issue I've been having with it is how the difficulty just fucking shoots through the roof at times. Playing on the easiest difficulty, the first three maps are just casual walks in the park, but then you get to the ferry bit and all of a sudden it's like you're playing Dark Souls with your hands tied behind your back. And if you somehow manage to get past that, the following maps have their own weird issues.

Also, if someone leaves your game, you're pretty much fucked because the bots are useless and no one ever joins in to replace them.

That said, it's not entirely terrible. Working your way through hordes of zombies is fun and the game runs well, but it definitely is way rougher around the edges than it should be, even in beta. It's a good thing it'll be on gamepass because it aint worth spending money on, but it can be decent fun in short bursts.

Fuck that ferry for real, though.

OK first impressions: It's fine? It feels like maybe a pre-release version of L4D2 with much better graphics. Like one of those pre-release builds you read about where they tried some funny stuff and and you go "wow that sounds neat I wonder why it's not in the release version."

That's probably unfair to this game, and there are probably a lot of things in L4D2 I'd stand aghast at the primitive nature of in the year of our lord 2021, but it's been 7 years since I played that, so this has to compete with my rose-tinted memory.

I like the card thing, although it didn't seem very well explained to me at first what was going on with it. It's Good. Melee feels better than what I remember from L4D, so that's also Good. The card that upgrades your punch into a stab straight up gives you the stab from COD, which is an excellent stab. I like the weapon variety and the attachments and all the nitty-gritty nature of that stuff, although, as a system, it kind of feels wasted on the enemies the game gives you.

Naming a character Walker in a game about zombies where characters shout each other's names a lot is rude.

The gap between difficulty levels is absurd

A zombie I had killed had a basketball jersey texture instead of a face texture; unfortunately he melted before I thought to get a screengrab

A lot of the zombies' neutral animations feel exactly lifted from L4D, although the polish for when each animation is triggered seems to not be there, and you see zombies doing stuff that doesn't feel right for where they're standing. Admittedly this would happen occasionally in this game's predecessors, as well, but I don't remember it being this common, and in any case the old games are old and we should be better than that.

So yeah I guess it's pretty much Left 4 Dead 2, plus some neat, if sometimes superfluous-feeling new mechanics, plus some QoL improvements, plus jank, and minus character. All in all I think I'd rather be playing Vermintide, even though that game has its own problems, but there's enough here that I'll keep futzing with it, I think.

Edit: Oh! And the bots are criminally lame. But that's almost a standard in this genre.

Jesus christ the bots are so fucking useless. I have to pick up 2 bombs and plant them on the ship to sink it? Cool... Except I'm the only one picking them up. So I grab the bomb and fight my way through multiple hordes to plant the first one and then I have to run back and get the 2nd bomb.

  • Local H JayLocal H Jay Registered User regular
It's actually impressive how useless they are, they don't even prioritize getting people up when they fall down

Tried the beta out and think it will be good for coop with my kid. We played a lot of WWZ and this is much nicer to look at on top of the L4D feel.

I assume there isn't a way to change your social name? I used "urahonky" since that's my steam name and what I've used online almost forever but this game censors it to "ura*****" and I'm having a hard time getting PUGs because people just assume I'm going to be a racist shitbag.

  • urahonkyurahonky Cynical Old Man Registered User regular
I got a chance to play with some friends today and it's definitely 100% better. I think we're all remembering the fun times we had in L4D and L4D2. Solo is incredibly boring and frustrating in all games.

  • Evil MultifariousEvil Multifarious Registered User regular
I played for the first time with a full stack of friends last night and had a great time, even on the easiest difficulty. I've only played the one campaign but I don't understand all the negativity — this is very much an updated left 4 dead with some extra bells and whistles, which is great!

Well, I do get the issue for people who loved Versus campaigns, which were very fun. Have they not said they'll add that later?

I was shocked to see "mixed" reviews on Steam. I suppose not everybody has a consistent crew to game with, though, and if you're trying to group up or use bots, the bad matchmaking and dumb AI would sour the experience.

  • urahonkyurahonky Cynical Old Man Registered User regular
Yeah the AI is really bad and sometimes PUGs can be just as bad (had one constantly scare all of the birds away). I think we're all older now and it's harder to get a group together (at least this is my case... L4D2 was prior to having 3 kids).
