... but why do we not have a band booked for PAX that plays sea chanteys?
I propose that a chantey-playing, sea-song-singing musical offering is exactly what the expo needs to offset the other nerd-pop sets we're sure to see. I won't get too verbose here, but if they're still together, Tom Goux's Ernestina chorus would be an authentic choice, though some of the bands that contributed to the Rogue's Gallery compilation would be awesome, too, and probably more in tune with your prototypical PAXgoer's musical tastes.
I think Pandora is rigged to steer its music lovers toward Stan Rogers (it played "Barrett's Privateers" for me in the first hour of my listening) but now, every time I think "sea chanteys", it registers mentally as "unmitigated awesome". Is there anyone else out there that thinks pirate music at PAX is an idea worth investigating?
P.S. It does not surprise me if the answer is "no". Nobody younger than about 50 seems to share my love of sea chanteys around here.
Sea who? Sorry but I never even heard of them until this post and thus google had to once again save me. They seem... interesting.

The problem with America is stupidity. I'm not saying there should be a capital punishment for stupidity, but why don't we just take the safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself?
I'm on the Freezepop mailing list, and I just got their most recent update. It includes tour dates.
August 29-31 - we can finally confirm that once again we are going back to seattle to play at PAX!! last year was INSANITY, so get ready for more of that this year. with the minibosses, mc chris, mc frontalot, jonathan coulton, the oneups, the darkest of the hillside thickets, and anamanaguchi. as well as 5 million other things to see and do. oh man. oh yeah.
and, we are planning some west coast dates around this as well! stay tuned, we'll be getting more details very soon :-)
Admittedly, I used to really like Freezepop a lot, but their performance in Austin during SXSW was a little ... how shall I say ... disappointing. Now I see they have been named best live act in Boston. This means that either there are few good live acts in Boston (where's Chucklehead when you need them?), or I caught them on a bad night. Hoping for the latter.
Cheers! 8-)

I'm guessing it was the latter, lol. Their performance at PAX07 really was insanity, as they said, and we were the largest crowd they have ever played to before. I think that alone would really make then enjoy coming back.
Anyway, definitely good news, I will be looking forward to getting better footage this year then I did last year, in case they get cut from the DVD again. :P
I've been in contact with the guys behind Anamanaguchi the amazing NES chip-scene band that has been revealed to be performing at PAX 2008 by Destructoid.com a few months ago.
They were down for the interview so it is currently up at my new blog www.mypaxblog.com .
This is a personal blog that I created as a huge fan and supporter of PAX.
Hopefully I can bring you guys some unique content before and during PAX. I'll be working really hard to keep this blog fresh and up to date.
I hope you guys enjoy this interview. I'm a big fan of Anamanaguchi and I was pleasantly shocked to hear they were performing this year. WOot!

So we go through our light Jazz routine of playing stuff from ..EarthBound, Final Fantasy VI, Super Mario RPG.. and the whatnot, and some wine-o lady comes up slurring, “Oh, I love how you young people are playing such sophisticated music! It’s so nice! You should play at my son’s wedding!†To which I replied in my head, “Yeah, you like that ..Super Mario Kart.., don’t cha…†It was good times.
Yeah, we have a lot of new stuff for this year. Usually we play almost the same set each year, because we play a lot of classic NES stuff, and as much as you’d like to please everyone and play some obscure games out there, many folks are there to hear the most popular ones, and hell let’s face it there’s a reason why the most popular, NES soundtracks are the most popular. They rule. And we never want to play too long. Our ideal set time would be 45 min to an hour, but you can’t really do that at PAX, that’s kind of the exception…we’ll play until people leave. So we’re gonna definitely play a bunch of old stuff, but we’re also mixing it up with some brand new medleys, like the whole soundtrack to Castlevania 2, we’ve also got a new Batman medley, there’s some other stuff too..
Holy smokes, maybe I'm late to the party on this one but MC Chipmunk by Optimus Rhyme is about MC Chris right? Is this the first nerdcore lyric war? Should I be expecting drive-bys and turf wars to follow? I meen, the lyrics are pretty forward.
I'm not sure about first, but it sure isn't the only. Check out...

I know I'm forgetting about some, but thats a nice list to start with.
MC Chris, JoCo and Freezepop is all I need, but I am intruiged by The Darkest of the Hillside Thickets. They seem interesting and weird, in the best way possible.
I just think it would be epic to randomly see this at PAX. I would LOL hard. :P
Yeah, the OneUps were pretty sweet too. I think that I just love everything about PAX. I wish that we had PAX instead of Christmas; however I also wish that I could roll around in bacon, benjamins, and societal backlash. :P whatever.
The official lineup was posted on the main page a few days ago.
Returning this year are Freezepop, mc chris, MC Frontalot, the minibosses, Jonathan Coulton and the oneups, and fresh talent for the concerts are Anamanaguchi and the Darkest of the Hillside Thickets!

Just a guess here... maybe the Powers That Be didn't want the lineup to be too repetitive, so they made room for some fresh sound. Really, how fun would the concerts be if it was the same performers every single year? Maybe NESkimos will be back in another year or two. I'd love to see them since i missed their show last year.

Considering MC Frontalot, The Minibosses, and Optimus Rhyme have been at PAX all 4 years so far, I'd expect them back again. And they better damn well get Jonathan Coulton back again, because he kicked ass last year.
For srs, MC Chris SUCKED hardcore donkey bawls last time he played PAX. I would NOT waste my time listening to him again, and neither should anyone else!
I can bring my DJ stuff and rockzor some techno if anyone is down! Just let me know when/where!
My myspace: www.myspace.com/holeydj - add me and msg me if you that sounds cool...if all else fails we can just hit up the 2 bedroom hotel sweet my friend and i have and get the party going all night!
I always love the minibosses though...and freezepop rocked it last year.

i respectfully disagree, i thought it was amazing, and i loved how long he stayed after to chat with fans. he did get a lil pissed at one point during fett's vette, though, when people screwed up one of the chorus'

One of the many genres that noone would peg me to have--but I do.
I love sea chanteys. And I also love the Rogue's Gallery compilation. Jack Shit, Lucinda Williams and--of course--John C. Reilly are sheer brilliance.

Hope you enjoy.
That's a pretty interesting read. I just assumed they used a MIDINES cartridge for their NES sounds, their way is a bit more hardcore.

LOL, even more reason it would be cool to see them. :P
Come to think of it though, he reminds me a lot of Jonathan Coulton. Sounds like him too...
Optimus broke up. They're all doing solo gigs now.
I just got an email from Liz E. She says Freezepop is really excited to be coming back to PAX, eeee!
Last year's show was great.
Aww, that's a bummer. Thanks for the info. Wonder what happened to the NESkimoes though.
Perhaps they don't like us anymore. :P
Maybe it was just me, but it seemed like the crowd didn't really cheer much for them last year.
That could be as well. :P
Anyway, I'm just happy to be able to see Freezepop, The OneUps, Minibosses, and Jonathan Coulton again.
Yeah he better be back!
No! Bad dyaballikl!

He's just not for everyone.
I just recently found out about The Megas. They're amazing and should go to PAX. I'm going to see their show in Hollywood tonight! I'm excited!
